[fprint] Why can I install fprint and fprint_demo

Which user did you enroll as?
Which user are you trying to login to with KDM?

I'm guessing that you ran "enroll" as root, hence "su" verifies the root 
account just fine, however at the KDM login screen you're trying to 
login as a non-root user that you have not enrolled -- so no 
fingerprints are available.
